Biographical Sketch

I am a user research engineer with a Ph.D. in experimental social psychology. I moved to the Seattle, WA metro area in 2003 to work at Microsoft. I am currently working on video games in the Microsoft Game Studios User Research group. My recent products include Halo 3, Shadowrun, and Age of Empires III: The War Chiefs. Before joining MGSUR, I worked on the 2005 Media Center Edition of Windows XP and the Xbox 360 console interface.

Before I went into usability, I was a postdoctoral research psychologist at the University of Memphis in Tennessee. During my postdoc, I did research on a computer program that converses in natural language with students on topics in physics and computer literacy. I also learned about usability and prepared for my transition to industry during this time.

I grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana. At the age of 16, I moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana to attend Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, a residential public high school. A few months after I graduated in 1990, I moved to Los Angeles, California to attend the University of Southern California. I graduated with a B.A. in psychology in 1994. In 1995, I moved to East Lansing, MI for my first year of graduate school at Michigan State University. In 1996, I transferred to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with my advisor, Professor Galen V. Bodenhausen. I earned my Ph.D. from Northwestern in 2000.

I spend a lot of my free time playing video games on my Xbox 360, Playstation 2, GameCube, and PC. Role-playing games are my favorite genre, although I enjoy playing many types of video games. I enjoy indoor rock climbing, Aikido, and Tai Chi. I study American Sign Language as a hobby and Buddhism as a philosophy. I have two adorable cats, Jake and Gracie. I am also temporarily fostering a third cat. I enjoy listening to music (favorite artists include Sarah McLachlan and matchbox twenty) and reading (favorite books include the Dune series by Frank Herbert, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg).
